Eric’s Life Lesson # 49: “I am a Fruit Grower in the Kingdom of Heaven (quality fruit to give away).” Part 9: Gentleness

Posted on July 2, 2021July 2, 2021 by Eric Raby

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.” (Galatians 5:22-23 NKJV)

“Now I, Paul, myself am pleading with you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ—who in presence am lowly among you, but being absent am bold toward you.” (2 Corinthians 10:1 NKJV)

“Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.” (Colossians 3:12 NLT)

Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love.” (Ephesians 4:2 NLT)

When I was a kid one of my favorite TV shows was “Gentle Ben.” Ben was a very large, full grown grizzly bear. He was the pet of a young boy whose family lived in the wilderness. This massive bear was as tame and friendly to this boy as a puppy, yet when Ben or his friend were in any form of danger all Ben needed to do was stand up on his hind legs and growl. He could be terrorizing if need be. This is the picture of what the Bible describes as gentleness (also translated as meekness).

Jesus is described as being gentle or meek, yet He holds all of the power of the universe in His hands. In the Gospels He is described as a servant, yet in Revelation He is called the King of kings and Lord of Lords. He came to Earth in a humble manger and freely laid down His life. When He returns He will rule with an iron rod of dominant authority. He is the perfect picture of the fruit of gentleness.

Gentleness (meekness) is best defined as “power under control.” Meekness is not weakness. Being gentle is purposely holding back for the sake of the other. The Holy Spirit gives me the ability to serve even when I have the power and authority to rule. I recently read an expression that fits here: “as believers we are to rule with the heart of a servant and serve with the heart of a ruler.” Gentleness is the key to doing this.
