“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” (Psalm 91:1 NKJV)

Here we go with Psalm 91. Throughout this Psalm there is a clear theme of divine protection. Verse 1 begin with identifying the location in which I am safe and protected. It is in the “secret place of the Most High.” It is a place that is kept “secret” from my enemies. This place is referred to as a place in which I am “hidden.” It is a “shelter” in which I am “secure,” and find “rest.” In this place I am “under the protection of the Most High.”
The key given in verse 1 to experiencing this divine protection is found in the words “dwell” and “abide.” To “dwell” in Hebrew means to sit down, to remain, to settle, to marry, inhabit, live or sit enthroned. “Abide” in the Hebrew language means to stop, to stay permanently, continue, dwell, lodge, remain, or tarry in a place of rest. When I chose to stay in the place of protection I am able to rest in the security of the One in whose place I am staying. His “power no enemy can withstand.”
This verse foreshadows the relationship we have with Jesus who is the Vine and we are his branches. In Him, we are overcomers, and more than conquerors. No one, and nothing, can defeat us. We are able to sleep through any storm that life throws at us in the peace that comes from the One in whom we rest.
