The concluding statement of Psalm 91 is the promise of longevity. This promise is given throughout scripture and has three important elements. By reading verse 16 in various translations the three elements become obvious. They are “length of days,” “long life,” and “salvation.” Proverbs 3:1-2 clearly states this for me to see, “My son, do not forget my law, but let your heart keep my commands; for length of days and long life and peace they will add to you.” Along with “length of days,” and “long life,” Proverbs 3:2 promises me “peace” which is the same as the “salvation” promised in Psalm 91:16. Let’s briefly look at these 3 elements of longevity.
Length of Days – This refers to the “fullness” aspect of longevity. It is referring to having days that are productive and full of purpose. It is this productivity and purpose that brings satisfaction. Living a long life is not of much value if it is a life without meaning. Many people do not get excited about living long because they expect to grow weak and feeble over time. What if I could live to be 120 or more and remain strong, sharp minded, and continue to have a robust, productive life?
Long Life – This refers to the duration of my life. There is no reason for my body to die apart from sin. It was designed to continually regenerate and rejuvenate. Even today, with all of the toxic conditions in which I live, my body thinks it is going to live forever apart from death. In obedience to my death focused thoughts and words, my body will more freely yield to the toxins that are attacking it. If I take my thoughts captive, and control my words, to think and speak life to my body, it will obey and work harder to produce life. When I align my actions (nutrition, exercise, etc.) with my thoughts and words, I am able to either positively or negatively influence my body and create a significant impact on the degree of length of days and long life that I experience.
Salvation (peace) – This is an all inclusive term that includes, strength, prosperity, deliverance, restoration, peace of mind, nothing missing, nothing broken, etc. It is speaking of the “whole” person (spirit, soul, and body). This is describing a life in which I am continually rescued from anything that comes against me, and positioned to live in my Daddy’s blessing and favor.
Psalm 91 is a mind blowing promise of divine protection that results in a long, strong life worth living, with no limit or end, in which there is nothing missing or broken regardless of current age or condition.
I think it is well worth meditating on…
